Diwali or Deepaawali means an Array of Lamps. Diva or deepa lamps are lit on Diwali.
Diwali is a holiday celebrated around the world by 500-600 million people. Although it is a Hindu festival it is mostly enjoyed in India by people of every religion. It is celebrated with fireworks, lights, dancing, music and art/painting. Many people in India make “rangoli” in their house or outside. Rangoli is a pattern which is made on the floor, normally by colored powder, but in the house it is made with paint.
Diwali comes in October or November every year on a new moon day. The Hindu calendar is based on the movement of the moon and has 12 lunar months and about 354 days. The Western calendar is based on the movement of the sun and has about 365 days.
